The Umphang valley
To reach the Umphang valley from Mae Sot it is 180 km on a winding mountain road. There is only one access road, the valley is a dead end. The difficult access is certainly the reason why the Umphang Valley Trek is somewhat much more remote than all the treks organized in the Chiangmai or Chiangrai areas. The valley is not much developed to tourism.
The walking distances during the trek are long and the trails are more difficult to walk, especially during the wet season. However there is no hard long climbs or steep downhills, so it is suitable for people with less fitness training. We have run this trek for families with children, but children have to be experienced to hike! No vehicle access in this jungle.
Raining Season
During the raining season, which is begin of June to end of September, and according to the water level in the rivers, we might replace the “bamboo rafting” by a descent on rubber rafts. We will provide life-jackets and appropriate equipment. If extreme conditions (flooded river) occurs, we will amend the program and do only the trekking part. No change in price and no refund are made if we have to cancel the rafting part or make any other modification to the original tour program. This would be for participant’s safety and according to our standard operation procedure. Please ask us the latest info when you make a tour request for a trip during the raining season.
What to bring
We do recommend to take a small backpack as a day-pack which you can carry during the hike. It can contain items you might need during the day (camera, water bottle, sun cream). A second bag will be the main luggage, which can be kept in the vehicle until the evening, containing your overnight gear. Here is a suggestion for packing:
- 3 T-shirts (cotton), one short or long pants
- 3 pairs of socks. Sandals for the evening
- 1 light towel (fiber), toilet and personal effects
- personal prescription drugs, contact lenses, glasses
- sun-cream (waterproof), a hat or baseball cap, protective sunglasses and mosquito repellent
- take a light rain jacket or windbreaker
- a small flashlight is always useful, and take your camera for great photo opportunities
This list is not exhaustive and additional items should be taken in consideration depending to the season. During the winter season (December-February) take a good warm fleece and a long pant. During the raining season, a plastic rain coat is certainly a must.
