Thai Adventure Rafting - More Information

Company Profile and Safety

Thai Adventure Rafting started the first commercial white water rafting operations in Thailand in 1987. Thai Adventure Rafting celebrates it’s 20th successful year of operation in December 2007. During the last 19 ½ years, we transported over 20,000 people without injuries (only few bruises and cuts) on our rafting expeditions. This proves also that the Pai river can be very fun and safe. Still, for your safety, always check from reliable sources (guide books or neighborhood) the reputation and casualties of the operators you want to go with.

Is there a government control in Thailand on white water sports?
Unfortunately not. Anyone can become a “River Raft” guide overnight here (and many people do). As long as the guide and the tour operator has a TAT license. There are no issues or training about water sports or any other outdoor activities to obtain this license. Our river captains are formed under Guy Gorias’ supervision, and because of their seriousness and experience, we guarantee the operation is the safest on this river.

Briefing and safety procedure

After receiving a life jacket and a helmet (EEC standard) adapted to your size, you will listen to a safety briefing and paddling instructions. Mostly, the briefing will take place at our Thai Adventure camp in Pai city, sitting at our “La Terrasse” restaurant.

Equipment:

Our equipment is EEC approved, imported material and equipment, well maintained and repaired.

Due to the remoteness of the Pai River, Thai Adventure uses only state of the art equipments. We also use a different size of boat depending on the water-level:

  1. Imported Hypalon self-bailing boats from “Aqua Design” made in EEC – best fabric on the international market-
  2. Imported Airex-foam life jackets from “Aqua Design” – EEC approved -
  3. Imported helmets from “Decathlon” or “Aqua Design” – EEC approved -
  4. Imported paddles from “Carlisle” USA
  5. Imported waterproof containers for cameras (EEC) and dry bags for personal bags (USA).

Our guides and staff:

Our guides and captains are selected according to their physical condition, friendliness and senses of responsibility. Then they are trained according to the international standard of rescue and first aid, they wear rescue jackets and carry throw bags. Born from the diversity of Pai & Mae Hong Son culture, they will share with you their happiness and sense of the nature.

  1. Tour leaders: Chai, Poo, Mike, William, Kasem, Chicken. (between 8 to 15 years experience).
  2. Captains: Aroon, Uthai, Thip, Yom. (They have between 3 to 4 years experience)
  3. Secretary: khun Jeap.
  4. Logistic: Wan, Toon

Pai River Rafting Season Charts

The heavy rain all over Northern Thailand in 2005 and 2006 caused major floods, even in the village of Pai, and the city of Chiangmai, where the night bazaar was fully under water. By any means, if you see the Pai river in Pai city with a high level of water and indications of lots of debris (woods, bamboo, plastic) in the river. Do not go on a rafting trip. Thai Adventure has and will cancel all trips with a potential risk and give a full refund to its customers. The heavy rain period is usually mid-August to end of September (as shown above). Fortunately this season 2007 we had no flooding.
