Wat Prathat Doi Suthep Temple, Chiangmai, Thailand
Doi Suthep Temple as people usually call it, was founded in 1383 when the first chedi was built.
Over time, the temple has expanded with the building of many more holy shrines. The road to the temple was first built in 1935. This 15 km scenic and winding is now wide and paved the entire way. To access the temple entrance there is a long staircase with over 300 steps, or as an alternative, one can climb a short cogwheel train to the top. Before entering the temple ground, visitors must take off their shoes and dress politely. Doi Suthep Temple is probably the most revered temple in Chiangmai province. The temple features a tall gold Chedi seen on nearly all Chiangmai postcards.
Within the Temple ground one can see many shining shrines, bells and various statues, and Buddhist people paying homage and making prayer. Scenic views of Chiang Mai can be seen on the other side of the temple, when the sky is clear.
